About Our Buff Cheeked Gibbon
The Buff-cheeked gibbon is a graceful, tree-dwelling primate that lives high in the forest canopy. It’s found in the tall, undisturbed evergreen and semi-evergreen forests of southern Vietnam, sometimes even in bamboo forests, and can be seen at altitudes up to 2,000 metres.
Their diet is made up mainly of fruits, leaves, and flowers, all gathered from high in the treetops. These agile gibbons are specially adapted for life in the canopy, rarely coming down to the ground.
Male Buff-cheeked gibbons have dark brown to blackish fur, with striking orange-red or buff-coloured cheeks and a slightly crested crown. Females and young are a lighter buff or pale orange-brown, with adult females distinguished by a black patch on the top of the head.
Sadly, Buff-cheeked gibbons are classed as endangered. Their biggest threats are habitat destruction and poaching, which continue to put pressure on wild populations.
