About Our Siamang Gibbon

The Siamang is the largest of all gibbon species, known for its elegant movement through the trees and its loud, emotive calls that echo across the forest. These impressive primates can grow to nearly twice the size of other gibbons. With shaggy black fur and a patch of grey around the mouth and chin, both males and females look alike. Babies are born completely black. One of the Siamang’s most distinctive features is its large throat sac, which inflates to amplify their deep, powerful vocalisations.

Siamangs are found in the tropical rainforests of Sumatra, Peninsular Malaysia, and a small area of southern Thailand. They live in both primary and secondary forests, often in areas that receive up to five metres of rainfall each year. Most of their time is spent high in the mid to upper canopy. Their diet mainly consists of leaves and fruit, but they also eat insects, small animals, and birds’ eggs.

Sadly, Siamangs are endangered. The biggest threats they face are habitat loss—especially due to deforestation driven by palm oil plantations—and the illegal pet trade.
