About Our Sumatran Tiger
The smallest tiger subspecies, the Sumatran tiger has close-set stripes and a dark orange coat ideal for its rainforest habitat. Distinguishing features include a beard and mane, longer whiskers, false-eye spots on the ears, webbed toes, and tree-climbing claws. They prey on animals such as fish, monkeys, and deer, usually hunting at night. With fewer than 400 left in the wild and a captive population of around 235, this critically endangered tiger is facing severe threats. Thrigby Hall contributes to sustainable captive breeding programmes for this species.
Meet Raja – A New Arrival at Thrigby Hall Wildlife Gardens
We’re thrilled to welcome Raja, a magnificent two-year-old male Sumatran Tiger, to Thrigby Hall Wildlife Gardens. Raja joined us in summer 2025 from Frankfurt Zoo as part of the international breeding programme for this critically endangered species, of which fewer than 400 remain in the wild.
Full of confidence and curiosity, Raja is already settling in well and making a strong impression on our animal care team. He will be joined later this year by a female tiger as part of our continued commitment to the conservation of Sumatran Tigers.
Raja’s arrival marks an exciting new chapter for our tiger habitat, following the sad loss of our much-loved male tiger, Kubu, in early 2025. We know how important these iconic animals are to our visitors, and we’re proud to continue playing a role in their global protection.
Raja may spend some time in his off-show area as he gets used to his new surroundings – please be patient and check back often as we share updates on his journey.
