About Our Saltwater Crocodile
The saltwater crocodile is the largest reptile on Earth, reaching over 6.5 metres in length and weighing more than 1,000 kilograms. With a reputation as a powerful predator, this species can take down almost any animal that ventures too close to the water’s edge—including birds, mammals, and even other reptiles.
Despite its name, the saltwater crocodile is most commonly found in brackish coastal waters such as estuaries, rivers, and mangroves. Its powerful jaws deliver the strongest bite of any animal, and its sharp teeth—measuring up to 13 centimetres—make it perfectly equipped to hunt large land animals. These crocodiles are expert ambush predators, silently lurking below the surface before lunging with incredible force at unsuspecting prey.
Although they’re most at home in the water, saltwater crocodiles often bask in the sun on land and must come ashore to lay their eggs.
While they have very few natural predators, humans have long hunted saltwater crocodiles for their meat, eggs, and especially their valuable skins, which are used in the fashion industry.
