About Our Asian Short Clawed Otter

The Asian Small-Clawed Otter (Aonyx cinereus), also known as the Oriental Small-Clawed Otter, is the smallest otter species in the world. Native to South and Southeast Asia, it can grow up to 96 cm in length and is easily recognised by its short claws, which do not extend beyond the pads of its webbed toes.

These otters thrive in a variety of aquatic habitats, including riverbanks, freshwater wetlands, mangrove swamps, and even rice paddies. Their diet consists mainly of molluscs, crabs, and other small aquatic creatures. While often seen in pairs, they also form close-knit family groups of up to 12 individuals.

Found from southern India and China to the Malay Peninsula, the Asian Small-Clawed Otter is currently listed as Vulnerable on the IUCN Red List. Major threats include habitat destruction, water pollution, and localised hunting.
