About Our Visayan Warty Pig

Visayan warty pigs are one of the world’s rarest wild pig species, found only on a few of the Visayan Islands in the Philippines. Sadly, they’re critically endangered and face an uncertain future in the wild.

These pigs are medium-sized and solidly built, with a very distinctive look. Their name comes from the noticeable warts on the faces of the males. Their dark coats are often black or deep brown, with contrasting white patches on their snouts, bellies, and lower legs. Males, or boars, can weigh up to 70 kilograms, while females are usually a bit smaller.

During the day, Visayan warty pigs roam through forests in search of food. They eat a wide variety of things, including roots, fruits, tubers, leaves, and even small invertebrates. With their strong snouts and excellent sense of smell, they’re well adapted to digging through the forest floor to find a meal.

Unfortunately, these pigs are now critically endangered, as listed by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN). Their biggest threats are habitat loss—due to deforestation and agricultural expansion—and hunting. They are sometimes hunted for food or used in local rituals. With only small populations remaining in limited areas, their survival hangs in the balance.
